HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) —
No appeals are in the courts to try to delay this week's scheduled execution of a 33-year-old Dallas man for the 2001 fatal shooting of a police officer who was off-duty and working security at a club.
Licho (LEE'-cho) Escamilla (Es-cuh-MEE'-uh) is set to die Wednesday evening for the slaying of Dallas Officer Christopher Kevin James.
Escamilla already was wanted for fatally shooting a neighbor in Dallas when he got involved in a brawl outside the club, pulled out a gun and opened fire on police.
James was among four uniformed Dallas officers at the scene. He was hit twice and witnesses said Escamilla shot him three more times in the head.
Escamilla would be the 24th convicted killer put to death this year in the U.S.
